Rockeries on Whidbey Island, WA
Custom rockeries built for Whidbey Island slopes.
A well-built rockery holds a slope in place while looking like a natural part of the land. Creative Gardens designs and builds rockeries on Whidbey Island, using large natural boulders to create retaining walls, terraced gardens, and stable slopes that suit each property's setting and purpose.
From waterfront homes above Penn Cove to wooded lots near Langley and rural properties throughout the island, every slope is different. We consider soil type, drainage, slope height, access, and the surrounding landscape to build rockeries that are strong, attractive, and made to last.
Natural.
Stable.
Experienced.
Lasting.
What Is a Rockery?
A rockery is a retaining wall made of large quarry boulders stacked without mortar. Each stone is carefully set to rest on the stones below it and lean back into the slope, so the wall is held together by weight and fit. Because there is no concrete face, water can drain through the joints, and the wall blends naturally into the landscape.
Rockeries can be used to level a sloped yard, create terraced planting beds, support a driveway cut, frame a patio, or add structure to a hillside. Planting pockets between the boulders allow ferns, groundcovers, and perennials to soften the stone over time.
Built for Whidbey Island Conditions
Whidbey Island's landscape was shaped by glaciers, leaving behind sloping lots, high banks, and soils that range from dense hardpan to loose sand and gravel. Seasonal rain, wind exposure, and coastal bluffs add to the challenge. A rockery that works well on one property may need a different approach on another.
We set the base of each rockery on firm ground, choose stone sized for the height and load of the wall, and install drain rock and drainage behind the boulders so winter rains don't build up pressure. For taller walls or properties near bluffs and shorelines, we help identify when engineering or Island County permits may be needed.
Rockeries That Fit the Landscape
A rockery should look like it belongs on the property. We select boulders for their size, shape, and color, and set each one so the wall has a natural, balanced appearance. Stone steps, curves, and planting areas can be built into the design to connect the rockery with patios, pathways, and gardens.
We also repair and rebuild existing rockeries that have begun to lean, bulge, or settle, restoring both stability and appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Rockeries on Whidbey Island
What is a rockery?
A rockery is a retaining wall built from large natural boulders stacked without mortar. Each stone is set to lean back into the slope and lock against the stones below it, while the open joints allow water to drain through the wall.
Do I need a permit or engineering for a rockery?
Many low garden rockeries do not. Taller walls, walls supporting a driveway or structure, and walls near marine bluffs or shorelines may require an engineered design and Island County permits. We help identify what applies to your property.
How long does a rockery last?
A properly built rockery can last for decades. A firm base, the right size stone, a slight lean into the slope and good drainage behind the wall are the keys to long-term stability.
Can you repair or rebuild an existing rockery?
Yes. We evaluate leaning, bulging or settling rockeries and recommend resetting stones, improving drainage, or rebuilding the affected section.
Do you build rockeries throughout North and South Whidbey Island?
Yes. Creative Gardens builds rockeries throughout Whidbey Island, including Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Greenbank, Freeland, Langley, Clinton, and nearby areas. Project availability may depend on location and scope.
